Kokonat is a brand that was created in June 2018 with the aim of completely eliminating plastic from household products. Reusing materials that nature offers us such as coconut or bamboo, giving them a second life and transforming them into bowls, straws, spoons…
There is a real problem, and that is the mass consumption of plastic, and what this is doing to our planet. Every year over 8 million tonnes of plastic are thrown into the sea, which take hundreds of years to decompose.
We need a radical change, and it needs to start with ourselves, eliminating plastic from our everyday products. Kokonat stands for simplicity, caring for the planet and its humane values to guide our actions.
On the other hand, the products are made in India. At Kokonat we want to give dignified employment to those women in India who suffer gender violence and who, simply because they are women, have neither the possibilities nor the resources to be economically independent without the help of their husbands.
We have started by creating a small workshop in which Asha, Sonali and Varsha where we produce our bowls made from coconut shells. We make it possible for them to be trained and to have a decent job so that they can be financially independent. This is possible thanks to our collaboration with the NGO Lokpanchayat, which aims to help the rural population within Maharashtra, India. The women they help come from nearby villages because of domestic violence or because they have been widowed. They are taken into the shelter home so that they can rebuild their lives and become financially independent. Here they are provided with rooms for themselves and their children, food and various projects that allow them to reintegrate into society, including Kokonat.
