There are less than 6 months left – on July 1st- for the EU to ban the marketing of single-use plastics. These include straws and spoons. For this reason, the different industries that use these products are looking for alternatives to comply with the new regulations. One of these alternatives has been created by an entrepreneur from Barcelona, Marta Maneja. It consists of using products such as rice flour, apple fibre and vegetable oil to make edible vegan straws and spoons.
The idea for this startup was born at the beginning of March when Marta, together with Hernán, co-founder of this project, travelled to India, one of the destinations where the young professionals on the LEINN degree spend two months. India is one of the most polluted countries in the world, but, at the same time, it is one of the most aware in regards to the value and benefits of eco-friendly practices. It was this dual reality that inspired these two entrepreneurs to create a project to fight against single-use plastic.
Today, Gloop has already distributed more than 33,000 straws and spoons in 20 establishments.
